Hard Work vs. Strategic Work

I learn so much about my husband from the stories he shares from his experiences with people.
His students are a big part of his life, and so it is one of my favorite pass-times to hear him talk about some of the interesting people he meets at work.
In a motivational speech to his math students a few days ago, he spoke about the difference between
hard work and efficient/strategic work.
The students in one of his upper level classes continually would say, "we are working hard", but their grades were NOT showing it. He realized that they WERE truly working hard but the problem was that they were putting a lot, if not all of that hard work in the wrong place.
He gave an analogy since many of them are athletes:
"You can do push ups for 3 hours a day, every day but you will NOT get any results if you are
not doing the push ups correctly."
